Installation

Install BugTrail from source. It takes about five minutes.

Before you begin

You need:

  • Windows, macOS or Linux
  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge
  • Node.js 20 or newer (22 recommended). Check with node --version.
  • Git

Everything is free.

Install the toolkit

Open a terminal (Terminal on macOS and Linux, PowerShell on Windows) and run:

bash
git clone https://github.com/RS-22V/bugtrail.git
cd bugtrail
npm install
npx playwright-core install chromium

The last command downloads the browser that replays use.

Add the extension to your browser

  1. Open chrome://extensions (Chrome) or edge://extensions (Edge).
  2. Turn on Developer mode.
  3. Click Load unpacked and choose the extension folder inside the bugtrail folder.
  4. Optional: pin BugTrail Recorder from the puzzle-piece menu.

Reload open tabs

Tabs that were open before you installed the extension need a reload before they can be recorded.

Verify the install

bash
npm test

All tests should pass. The end-to-end test launches a real browser and exercises the extension.

Update

bash
git pull
npm install

Then click the reload arrow on BugTrail Recorder in the extensions page.
